Non-repetitive Strings over Alphabet Lists

چکیده
A word is non-repetitive if it does not contain a subword of the form vv. Given a list of alphabets L = L1, L2, . . . , Ln, we investigate the question of generating non-repetitive words w = w1w2 . . . wn, such that the symbol wi is a letter in the alphabet Li. This problem has been studied by several authors (e.g., [GKM10], [Sha09]), and it is a natural extension of the original problem posed and solved by A. Thue. While we do not solve the problem in its full generality, we show that such strings exist over many classes of lists. We also suggest techniques for tackling the problem, ranging from online algorithms, to combinatorics over 0-1 matrices, and to proof complexity. Finally, we show some properties of the extension of the problem to abelian squares.

LCS approximation via embedding into locally non-repetitive strings
A classical measure of similarity between strings is the length of the longest common subsequence(LCS) between the two given strings. The search for efficient algorithms for finding the LCS has been going on for more than three decades. To date, all known algorithms may take quadratic time (shaved by logarithmic factors) to find large LCS. In this paper the problem of approximating LCS is studi...

متن کاملSquare-free Strings Over Alphabet Lists
We solve an open problem that was posed in [GKM10]: Given an alphabet list L = L1, . . . , Ln, where |Li| = 3 and 0 ≤ i ≤ n, can we always find a square-free string, W = W1W2 . . .Wn, where Wi ∈ Li? We show that this is indeed the case. We do so using an “offending suffix” characterization of forced repetitions, and a counting, non-constructive, technique. We discuss future directions related t...
متن کاملForced Repetitions over Alphabet Lists
Thue [14] showed that there exist arbitrarily long square-free strings over an alphabet of three symbols (not true for two symbols). An open problem was posed in [7], which is a generalization of Thue’s original result: given an alphabet list L = L1, . . . , Ln, where |Li| = 3, is it always possible to find a square-free string, w = w1w2 . . .wn, where wi ∈ Li? In this paper we show that square...
متن کاملNon-Repetitive 3-Coloring of Subdivided Graphs
We show that every graph can be subdivided in a way that the resulting graph can be colored without repetitions on paths using only 3 colors. This extends the result of Thue asserting the existence of arbitrarily long nonrepetitive strings over a 3-letter alphabet.
